Fundraising

The main project "THIS Is Linux!" will be a community-driven effort. Almost all monies will come from community donations. Now, there cannot be any confusion here. ONE committee will execute all funds for THIS Is Linux! and child projects. Such child projects such as the first one, the pilot project, is "Linux4Austin." It was discussed and decided upon early on that each city that under-took a project would form their own finance committee. Those who administrate large sums of money chimed in quickly to tell me how much of an idiot I was for planning this outline. Point taken. It has been extremely challenging to find anyone to act as a finance committee for one city project. We can only imagine how badly bogged down the project would become when we tried to pick a new finance committee for each city. THIS Is Linux would die from inertia.

However, the more involved Lobby4Linux becomes in these projects, we are encountering more expenses. As an example, today we went to meet with an Exec from Samsung. Normally, this would not be seen as an expense, but when you calculate fuel and a modest meal, it begins to add up...Many trips like this are planned over the next three months. We foresee a good deal of traveling for meetings such as this in the near future and will be asking for donations on the Lobby4Linux website. This money cannot come from THIS Is Linux!. All community donataed funds must be spent on advertising production and costs. Lobby4Linux has no bridge to these funds, and the program was assembled with that safeguard built in.

Advertising

Aside from writings generated by blog of helios, we have no actual advertising. If a kindly member of the community could build a banner for "THIS Is Linux!" so other websites could display it, that would be cool. This way, the casual surfer will be able to see it and understand what we are doing. We also need a Logo for the project, so anyone with any ideas should draw something up and either submit it here or at the forums within L4L. clicking here will get you in the general virginity.

A conversation with Karlie from On-Disk produced some good ideas, especially her suggestion that we do a press release. I have a couple of them in the cooker, but they cannot be unleashed until we have the money people set up. Many prophetized that GETTING the money would be the hard part. Looks like this will turn out to be just a matter of getting the word out. We have a few thousand pledged as I type this. Folks are just waiting for a link to click to donate.

Promotional Work

Just word of mouth for now...advertising for pending advertising is a bit strange. It is just hard to do when one or two simple little things are holding us back. Make sure you let everyone know what we are doing...then guide them to Lobby4Linux.com. As soon as Tom King gets the server set up, we will have a temporary home for www.myfirstlinux.com There is a web presence there now, but not the actual page our radio listeners will be directed to. If I may be allowed just a smidge of self-promotion, I have worked my @$$ of on the new MFL, thank you very much. ;-)

Steering Committee

Steering...? we dun need no stinkin' steering...but here is what we do need. We need people who can commit to working on various committees for this project. We have asked for it on the front page of L4L, but no one has stepped forward and said "hey, I'll take care of...". We badly need people to take care of ".....".

It will be just a couple of weeks and we will be announcing a contest for commercial content. We will be looking for ideas and directions for these ads. The way it's looking right now, Samsung will be donating the first prize...one of their top of the line computers. The need for the folowing committees is real. Right now, we need committees formed for: material review, screenshot review, production and posting, and a small committee for keeping this wiki up and running. Well, organized more than up and running. Look, you have helios banging around in here and you don't wanna see the mess he can create if he spends any time in here at all. We need someone who has a good organizational eye and can add things as we need them. Gryphen has done a good job and continues to do so, but I am sure he will not balk at being given a bit of help.

Administration

There really isn't alot of admin to this as of yet. Please keep in mind that Lobby4Linux will be THE main outlet for news and events concerning all THIS Is Linux going-on. Each city or national project manager will report to L4L on how their project is coming along and we will take care of any press releases or articles highlighting their efforts. We will need maybe three people to commit themselves to helping with this task.

Mission Statement

I want this guy dead! I want his family dead! I want his house burned to the ground! I want to go there in the middle of the night and p*** on his ashes!

(DiNero as Capone in The Untouchables, speaking of Elliot Ness).

This has absolutely nothing to do with our Mission Statement or Goals. I just think it's one of the most definitive "I" statements in modern day cinema. I would NEVER point that line at anyone. I mean, I would NEVER specifically say anything nasty or wish any harm to, ohhh...let's say...uh, maybe Steve Ballmer. That would never happen. no-sir-eeee, never happen here.

For those who are still unclear about our mission and goal, it is to make GNU/Linux a viable and simple alternative to Microsoft Windows. We will attempt to make it so via public education and advertisement. We have a long way to go folks. Here is where I slip into my little cheerleading outfit and start waving my pom-poms. (My God that creates a disturbing mental image!)

In fact, "a long way to go" does not come close to describing the miles we have to catch up. MS Windows has over 90 percent of the world market, and we have the absolute audacity to challenge the most powerful monopoly on the face of the earth. Scared yet? You will be...you will be... Sorry, movie quotes seem to be possessing me. The fact is this: Linux, specifically a handful of GNU Linux Distros are easier and way more secure than Windows. People just resist change and we have to make sure they understand the ramifications of not changing. I am not advocating FUD. Wait a minute...yes I am. But the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt are legitimate, or they should be. FUD is not necessarily a bad thing if it is the truth. It is getting people to act outside of their human nature and try something new that will be the trick. So who's in? It's not going to be easy, nor is it going to be quick. Our children may have to finish the fight we start here, but the fight needs to be picked. From getting to know you guys via the forums and chats, I could not imagine anyone else I would rather share a foxhole than you'se guys.
