Folks, please make Greg feel welcome to the group. Greg is a serious student of Linux and the direction his career is leading him will be an asset to our efforts. I will let him tell more if there is more to tell. He has contributed greatly already and I am happy to have him on board. He has full access to the project mailbox and will be submitting things to other committee members via that mailbox...keep an eye open for his communicatins.

On behalf of Lobby4Linux and the Linux4Austin project (formally the austin project - copyright issues on the name) I want to thank you for your time. When it comes down to it, time is the most precious gift that one can give.

I like the idea put forth by Helios regarding advertising on the Kim Commando show. I've only listened to her show a couple times, but I do remember the show focussing on solving callers' computer problems.

This seems like the perfect stage to advertise to a core audience of computer users concerned with security, viruses, spam, and spyware. It seems to me that Linux far exceeds Windows in all four of these areas. I'm sure the rest of you agree.

In reference to the ideas of Jon Roland, we are definitely into the secondary tier of Linux users. The computer user with a moderate degree of experience should have very little trouble installing and running Linux for the first time. Most listeners of Kim Commando's show are either a) at least moderately experienced in computers or b)willing to learn more about their computer. These are two prerequisites for running Linux successfully. Our target audience should be the frustrated window users who is to try and do something to fix the problem.

All that having been said, I want everybody to know about Linux. So maybe it would be good to run ads on the morning commute time and on Saturday morning Commando show. Its good to get the Linux word out to the mass public listening to regular talk radio. However, I think the conversion to Linux ratio will be vastly higher if we focus a lot of ads on the Kim Commando show.

Also, I have another place that we could advertise. I initially found the Helios blog post "Hello world...this is Linux" from a link on the social bookmarking website digg.com. If you're not familiar with the idea of digg.com, imagine slashdot that is updated and moderated by the user base. Digg.com does a weekly technology podcast called diggnation that has a very large collection of listeners. IT has been ranked the number one technology podcast on iTunes in the past. Its even videocasted nationwide on TiVo.

Owner of digg.com, Kevin Rose, is a huge Linux advocate. The average listener of the podcast is technology literate, yet the vast majority of listeners still use windows. Their podcast needs advertisers. I think this would be a cheap alternative to radio. I also think we'd be reaching the perfect market.

I'm just throwing out ideas. Let me know what you think.

Have a nice day,

Greg
